Smart Watch - Fitbit Versa 2

Fitbit Versa 2

This is the latest smart watch from Fitbit, there not much change from their original Versa model. The design has been optimised a little bit and this Versa 2 is a little bit sleeker, has OLED display which is definitely brighter. The battery life has also been improved from the previous version.

It is very compact on the wrist, only 25 x 25 mm. Being a rouged fitness device, it features an aluminium case which is quite strong and can withstand water up to 50m deep, making this the most durable smart watch out there. Whether you are swimming, running in the rain or doing any kind of rugged activity outdoors, this watch should be able to take that kind of punishment.

Versa 2 used Fitbit’s own OS, which does a great job of making the user experience as simple as possible. Has a very short learning curve, so it’s good for newcomers.

The control interface is using touch control display, which may not always be very responsive, especially when it is sweaty or wet. It has Amazon’s Alexa as the voice assistant, which is excellent in terms of functionality. There is no built-in speaker in this just a microphone, so you can only input information. For taking calls use a Bluetooth headset or take calls directly on the phone.

Versa 2 may not have all the features and technical power of something like an apple watch but it has most of the features that you would use, such as basic notifications, NFC payments, built-in sleep tracking. Since this is very compact it is actually easy to sleep with, making sleep tracking very practical compared to other smart watches which may be cumbersome to sleep with.

There are 2 killer features, which no other smart watch has. First is the ability to customise the always-on display, setting the information that you want. You can also set the off-hours when the display will turn off. Secondly, the battery life of Versa 2 can go up to 6-7 days and 4 days is the minimum.

Pros:

Cheaper price, battery life, Custom display, Built-in sleep tracking, compact size, NFC payment, Alexa assistant, swim-proof.

Cons:

No built-in speaker

Smart Watch - Fossil Gen 5

Fossil Gen 5

This a watch from a traditional watchmaker has a stainless steel finish and definitely looks the most aesthetically pleasing compared to other models. It has a classic, more traditional watch style look and a 44mm circular face, much like the galaxy watch, which is significantly thicker and heavier than other top models here. The outer casing is quite durable, which can withstand water up to 30m. Overall finish is very nice.

Earlier models had a number of issues like the back or rear panel was coming out after using for a while, this model seems to be ok after using for a couple of weeks. Haven’t had any of those concerns during this period.

What I like about this is the control interface, which is a digital interface from google and works very well. Display is very bright and high quality. It has a built-in speaker and blue tooth.

Touch control is okay but not as precise as on apple watch, which may be due to the Google software which is not as well integrated with hardware as the apple software.

This has built-in google pay and google voice assistant, which is probably the best voice assistant available at present. And since it has a built-in speaker it can talk back to you and you can also take phone calls.

About battery life, it gives about 1.5 – 2.0 days for most users with the always-on display turned on. You can customise the settings by turning some of the features off, to get more battery life. This is almost at par with galaxy watch.

Pros:

Cheaper price, aesthetically pleasing, Built-in speaker, sleep tracking, swim-proof.

Cons:

Heavier and thicker in size

Smart Watch - Apple Series 5

Apple watch series 5

It is the most technically advanced and powerful watch available, has the best hardware and software integration in terms of the capabilities that it offers.

The core design hasn’t changed much since the first apple watch. Compared to series 4 it is pretty much identical in every way. It has a rectangular design with soft rounded off corners, has a digital crown interface, scratch-resistant front and back panels. The watch is water-resistant up to 50m. There are many case options available to customize the watch. WatchOS is far superior to other watches’ operating systems, which makes it smooth and easy to use. The ECG function which was introduced in series 4 is very much there in series 5 which can be assessed via the health app. It has all types of fitness tracking capabilities like heart rate, steps, calories etc. There are no major new features compared to series 4, except for always-on display and improved internal memory of 32 GB

But there are some major drawbacks of apple watch.

First, the price is way too much, it 40k plus for even the most basic model of apple watch series 5, which looks too overpriced. And then you can spend more on it if you want a tailored design and other such things. So the price is a big concern.

Secondly, another minor fault is that it does not have built-in sleep tracking. You have to use a third-party app, it would have been nice to have it built into the watchOS.

Thirdly, the main concern here is the battery life which is way too less. You can hardly go about one full 12-hour day in most cases. It is definitely the worst in terms of battery life. You can probably get about 1.5 days if you turn off some of its core features but this is not as good as other watches.

Pros:

Most advanced features, Apple pay, ECG app, swim-proof

Cons:

Low Battery life, high price, no built-in sleep tracking, only compatible with iOS devices.

Smart Watch - Samsung Active 2

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2

Samsung has changed its design from watch to watch however the active 2 design is pretty much the same as the previous active watch. It’s a circular design with a touch bezel where you can slide your fingers along the periphery of the display. This makes the interface quite responsive but still, the physical dial-in previous models were much better.

Active 2 has ECG capability like apple watch series 5 but it will be released by a software update at a later time. Sleep tracking is built into active 2, it can track your fitness parameters like steps, heart rate, calories etc.

Its operating system is probably its biggest fault. as it feels very clunky and unresponsive. The overall user experience is not as good if compared to other watches. Certainly not as good as the Fitbit and Apple watch. Even google interface feels better integrated compared to this.

Bixby assistant is also not as good as the other assistants. Not only the general knowledge of Bixby is lass but its voice recognition capabilities are also lacking.

One good thing is that, with future software updates, it is likely to have ECG capabilities like Apple watch.

Pros:

Samsung pay, sleep tracking, Future ECG capability

Cons:

User interface no very responsive, Voice assistant is very rudimentary

Conclusion

If I have to choose between all these models, I would say it’s a tie between Fitbit Versa 2 and Apple watch series 5. I am leaning towards Versa 2 because for below points

  • it cost less than half in price.
  • Secondly, it is compatible with iOS and Android devices.
  • Thirdly the battery life is sensational.
  • It has built-in sleep tracking
  • Versa has all the core feature that you would need

However, Fitbit Versa 2 is not as aesthetically pleasing as some other models, it not a fashion statement as such. It is simple, plain and minimalistic in most regards. A strong choice for someone new in the segment. If you want all the latest features and willing to spend more for it, then you should go for Apple Watch series5.

However, your choice will depend upon your individual requirements. I leave it up to you to decide for yourself.

Happy Shopping !!!
