Who invented the Air Conditioner?

Modern Air Conditioner Invention was done in 1902 by Willis Haviland Carrier, who was an Engineer in Brooklyn, New York. While working on a problem with a publishing company, he was trying to control the humidity of a room. He applied his knowledge of steam heating coils, which was already invented. Instead of hot stem coils, he reversed the process and used cold water coils. In his system, the air from the room was passed through the cold water coils. This not only cooled the air but also reduced the humidity. Air Conditioner Invention was therefore credited to Willis. This design was built and operational on 17 July 1902.

Willis Haviland Carrier was a graduate from Cornell University and working with Buffalo Forge Company when he began these experiments with air conditioning. He is known as the Father of air conditioning.

After Air Conditioner Invention as the demand for air conditioning started rising, Willis formed ‘The Carrier Air Conditioning Company of America’ in 1915, to cater to this demand. Demand kept rising and air conditioning became widely used to enhance the comfort in homes as well as automobiles in the 1950s. The first private home to be fitted with air conditioning was constructed in Minneapolis in 1914. Air Conditioner Invention was considered a big step towards a luxury lifestyle.

Who invented the term Air Conditioner?

The term ‘air conditioning’ was coined in 1906, by Stuart Warren Cramer of Charlotte, North Carolina, while he was trying to add moisture to the air for his textile mill. This term was later adopted by Willis to form his company.

Window type air conditioner invention was first by Robert Sherman of Lynn, Massachusetts in 1945. This was a fully functional air conditioner with air filter, cooling, heating, humidifying and dehumidifying.

Present-day air conditioners still follow the same basic principle since Air Conditioner Invention by Carrier in 1933. However, some advanced systems have been added like vapour compression, electronic controls with advanced sensors, diagnostics, latest materials, and energy-efficient processes. The system process has been optimized to attain higher efficiency and reduce the consumption of energy.

About Air Conditioners

Humidity can cause many health concerns

Air conditioners are an essential element in every home. Depending on the time of year and where you live, temperatures can potentially become very high and you may begin to experience uncomfortable living conditions. There’s nothing worse than living in a home which is too warm. Not only will these living conditions make you feel uncomfortable, they can put your health at risk as well.

Reasons for purchasing AC

There can be multiple reasons for purchasing AC. Regardless of how much money you have (or are willing to spend) there is likely some form of air conditioner within your budget. Here is a list of reasons why every home should be equipped with an air conditioner:

  • Air conditioners lower the temperatures when the air in your home reaches a certain degree, providing you and your family with a more comfortable living environment.
  • The health of children, elderly individuals, and pregnant women are especially at risk in high temperatures, and air conditioners provide a healthier environment in these situations.
  • Air conditioners reduce the amount of dust in your home. This entails a form of allergy relief for sufferers.
  • If you suffer from asthma, air conditioners are proven to help relieve asthma’s effects by improving the quality of air in your home.
  • Air conditioners also provide a healthier living environment for your pets, who often suffer from high temperatures more than humans do.

These are just some of the benefits associated with air conditioners. Some types of air conditioners can decrease the temperature in your home by 10 degrees or more. This can have a considerable impact on your quality of life and can improve living conditions for not only you but anyone living in (or visiting) your home.

If you are interested in purchasing an AC for your home there are many types to choose from. Research all the types of air conditioners before making any purchases. This will ensure you choose a style to suit your home the best.

How Air Conditioners Work

Learn about condensers, evaporators & compressors

All you really want to know is that there is a cold coil on the inside portion of your air conditioner unit. Air is blown over the cold coil to cool the inside of your house.

Now for the details:

Air conditioners use energy to transfer heat from the interior of your home to the outside, making the interior of your home cooler and more comfortable to live in. There are three major components to air conditioners:

  • Evaporator – The evaporator is the cold indoor coil used to cool the air in your home.
  • Condenser – The condenser is a hot outdoor coil which releases the collected heat outside.
  • Compressor – The compressor is a pump which is used to move a heat transfer fluid (or refrigerant) between the evaporator and condenser.

Process details:

The coil essentially circulates the chemical coolant from the outside to the inside (then back to the outside, and so on), where its action removes warm air from the inside of the building.

The chemical inside the coil is a low-pressure cool gas which becomes pressurized by the compressor and is made significantly hotter. The gas is now high-pressure hot gas which circulates through the coil on the outside portion of the AC unit. This is the back of the unit that you commonly see – with its distinct aluminium grating. In this part, the heated gas is cooled, helped along by a fan that blows air over the coil.

As the gas cools and shrinks again, it undergoes a chemical reaction that causes it to become excessively cold. By this time, it circulates back into the evaporator, on the inside portion of the unit, where it takes the warmth out of the indoor air and circulates back into the condenser where the process begins all over.

This is the process used in most forms of air conditioning. It is important to remember that each air conditioner has its own functioning methods and the outline above is a generalization of how the majority of air conditioners work.

Tips for Buying Air Conditioners

Saving money and time in your purchase decision

In many areas, air conditioners are essential to providing a comfortable and healthy living environment for you and the people you love. Air conditioners keep your home cool while outdoor temperatures rise. When shopping for an air conditioner there are many points to keep in mind which will not only ensure you’re purchasing an efficient product but can also benefit by saving your time as well as money.

Here are 10 tips to consider when buying an air conditioner:

  1. Choose a type of air conditioner. Before you begin shopping you will want to decide on the type of air conditioner which suits your home best. Models to choose from include window AC units, Split AC units and central air conditioning systems.
  2. Know the size of the unit you need. Before you begin shopping you will also want to choose a size. Window air conditioners especially require sizing before purchasing.
  3. Learn the terms. Know and fully understand all the jargon related to these products. This will ensure you receive the most effective unit for your home. Terms such as EERs and BTUs are especially important.
  4. Know the relative cost. Do some research into the general costs of air conditioners in your market. Know what a good deal would be.

Things to consider while shopping for an air conditioner:

  1. Ask about product efficiency. Know how to read the label for EER. Ask a professional salesperson the differences between models and ask them to help you which will be the most efficient in the long term.
  2. Set a budget and stick to it. If you can stick to your budget, you will be happier with the purchase in the end.
  3. Know what is involved in the installation process. Some window air conditioners can be particularly hard to install. Be sure to employ a licensed installer (with a guarantee) for larger installations. Faulty installation of an air conditioning unit can result in damage to your home and can add significantly to the overall cost.
  4. Understand the warranty. An air conditioner should be covered for at least a year. Many manufacturing companies will offer lifetime warranties on some units.
  5. Consider the features. What are the features you want in an air conditioner? If you want filters, cleaners or other accessories, ask about these at the time of purchase.
  6. What is the maintenance involved with the product? Are you going to want to take the necessary maintenance steps for the unit you have in mind?

Energy Star Air Conditioners

Environmentally friendly products that will save you money

Energy Star products are designed to be environmentally friendly, efficient products that not only act as a cooling source but serve many other environmental purposes as well.

A product must undergo several tests before it is rewarded with an Energy Star label. These guidelines and tests are strict in order to ensure the most efficient products for consumers. All Energy Efficient standards are set by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. Not only are these products tested to ensure their protection of the environment, they are also ensured to perform at the highest level possible.

Higher Efficiency

Energy Star central air conditioners have a higher seasonal efficiency rating than any other form of central air. They have also been proven to be 25 per cent more efficient than other models as well. Energy Star central air conditioning systems are more expensive upfront, but you will gain your money back over time with lower energy bills.

Money saved in electric bills

Energy Star room air conditioners can potentially save you a lot of money over a year on your electric bill. There are a number of models to choose from when it comes to Energy Star room conditioners and each model is better for the environment than other forms of air conditioning. Energy Star room air conditioners consume 10 per cent less energy than conventional models.

By purchasing an Energy Star product (as opposed to models without the Energy Star label) you are helping to promote a cleaner, healthier air and alleviate global warming. The quality of your product will not be compromised and will provide you with higher-level performance than most other models on the market.
